Additional Information: Open, upright and spreading deciduous shrub with glassy dark green leaves. Native to low woods, swamps, bogs and moist thickets, but occasionally found in dry upland areas. Clusters of white flowers bloom in spring. Black autumn berries are tart to bitter off the bush, but can be used to make tasty jams, jellies, syrup and wine. Spreads slowly to form a thicket, providing shelter for a variety of birds. Works well in a hedge or rain garden. Fall color is orange to burgundy.
