Soil: Prefers acidic, well-drained soil but adaptable to different soil conditions. May not tolerate flooding.

Light: Full sun - very shade intolerant

Growth Rate: Fast - height increases over 24" per year.

Additional Information: A tall, narrow-crowned pioneer tree that revegetates after fires and logging and in abandoned fields, but usually short-lived (50 years). Holds soil in place and protects slower growing trees. Toothed leaves are white on the undersides, especially when the tree is young. Silvery catkins appear before leaves. Foliage becomes golden yellow in fall.

Aspens host a variety of birds, mammals and butterflies, including the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail and Viceroy. Winter food source for deer, quail and ruffed grouse. Wood is commonly used for pulp, veneer, particle board, pallets and pellets.

1-year-old seedlings, 18-24”
