The Hardwood Package includes 5 of each hardwood (25 seedlings): Black Walnut, Bur Oak, Swamp White Oak, Paper Birch, and Sugar Maple. See individual tree species pages for more details.
All five species provide excellent benefits to many species of wildlife, including pollinators.
Seedlings are estimated at 12-18", 1-0.
Ideal conditions if planting all five in same area: full sun with moist soils.
A note of caution: black walnut exudes a plant growth deterrent and should not be planted near sensitive plants/trees nor should sensitive trees be planted within 50' off them. Anecdotal evidence suggests oaks and maples have some tolerance as do many birch. However, paper birch does not and should be planted separate from the walnut.
Seedling Summary
Black Walnut: Can grow to 75' tall. Edible to humans. Plant a tree for tomorrow - walnuts have just recently crept this far northward.
Bur Oak: Matures up to 80’ tall. A relatively long-lived hardwood and adaptable to weather extremes.
Swamp White Oak: May reach 70' tall. Despite its name, is adaptable to many soils. Like bur oak and walnut, provides a critical food source essential for winter wildlife survival.
Paper Birch: Matures at 70". Aesthetically pleasing and the peeling bark can be used for a variety of crafts. Do not plant within 50' of black walnut.
Sugar Maple: Matures at 80’. Provides pollen for early emerging pollinators. Wisconsin state tree.
