The Hardwood Package includes 5 of each hardwood (25 seedlings): Bigtooth Aspen, Black Cherry, Red Oack, Silver Maple and Sugar Maple.

Seedling information

Bigtooth Aspen (Populus grandidentata). Matures at 50-75’ tall with toothed leaves. Fast-growing and adaptable to a variety of soils. Needs full sun. Hosts many birds, mammals and butterflies. 1-0 seedlings, 18-24”.

 Black Cherry (Prunus serotina). Matures at 50-80’ with a spread of 30-60’. Adaptable tree prefers moist to slightly dry loam, clay-loam or rocky soils. Full sun to part-shade. Wood is valued for furniture. Fragrant white flower clusters bloom in sprin; dark purple-black fruit ripens in late summer. Fruits feed upland gamebirds, songbirds and wildlife. 1-0 seedlings, 18-24”.

Red Oak (Quercus rubra). Medium sized tree with a rounded to broad spreading, often irregular crown. Grows at a medium to fast rate and gen-erally a durable and long-lived tree. Matures at 50-75 ft.. with a spread of 50-75 ft . Easily grown in average, dry to medium moisture, acidic soil. Prefers good drainage. 1-0 seedlings, 12-18”.

Silver Maple (Acer saccharinum). Very fast growing to a mature height of 50-80’ and spread of 35-50’. Prefers full sun to partial shade. Grows in a wide range of soil, but prefers deep, moist, acidic soil. Massive root system; plant away from sidewalks, foundations and septic fields. Seeds feed birds; trunk cavities shelter  mammals and owls. 1-0 seedlings, 12-18”.

Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum). Also known as Hard Maple and valued for its sap production. Matures at around 50-80’ with a spread of 35-70’. Easily grown in average, medium to wet soils; does best in full sun and well-drained soil. 1-0 seedlings, 12-18”.

 

Pick-up in late April/early May

Seedling orders must be picked up in person in late April or early May in Medford or Phillips, Wisconsin. Taylor County LCD does not ship trees, shrubs or planting products to individual customers.

The exact pick-up dates will be sent out in early April by email and/or USPS mail. The tree pick-up schedule has typically been on a Thursday, 3-6 p.m. and Friday, 8-11 a.m., for Medford orders and Friday from 8:30-11 a.m. for Phillips orders. If you are unable to pick up your order during those days/times, you may send another person to the pick-up or contact the Taylor County LCD at 715-748-1469 to make other arrangements.
