Bur Oak (Quercus macrocarpa). Named for its wild and wooly acorns, this oak makes a great shade tree and yields plenty of acorns for wildlife. Grows to 70-80’ tall and 30-100’ wide. Tolerates a variety of soil conditions. 1-year-old seedlings, 12-18”.
Paper Birch (Betula papyrifera). Sometimes called Canoe or White Birch, this cold-climate species matures up to 80 feet tall. Fast-growing. After 6-8 years, dark brown bark gives way to chalk white bark that peels in papery layers. Golden fall color. 1-year-old seedlings, 10-24”.
Red Maple (Acer rubrum). Also known locally as Soft Maple, this tree has medium to dark green leaves in summer and with reds to yellows in fall. Matures at 40-60’ with a spread of around 40’. Tolerates a wide range of soil conditions, but prefers moist, slightly acidic soil. 2-year-old seedlings, 12-18”.
Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum). Also known as Hard Maple and valued for its sap production. Matures at around 50-80’ with a spread of 35-70’. Easily grown in average, medium to wet soils; does best in full sun and well-drained soil. 1-year-old seedlings, 12-18”.
Sycamore (Plantanus occidentalis). Matures at 75-100’. with a massive trunk and a crown of huge, crooked branches. Prefers full to partial sun and moist, deep, rich soils, but adaptable to a wide variety of soils. Seeds feed birds and small mam-mals. Older trees pro-vide nesting for owls, chimney swift and wood ducks. 1-year-old seedlings, 12-18”.
