Scientific Name: Ilex verticillata

Mature Height: 6-12 feet

Mature Spread: 6-15 feet

Hardiness: Zones 3-9

Soil: Adaptable to sandy, loam or clay, prefers acidic, moist to wet soil and tolerates poorly drained and compacted soils.

Light: Full sun to part shade

Growth Rate: Moderate to fast (height increase of 12-24" per year)

Additional Information: Other names include Black Alder and Winterberry Holly. Native shrub has colorful and abundant fruit and works well for property borders and screens. Grows wild in acidic soils in forested wetlands or along ponds, lakes and marshes. Winterberry is a food source for some wildlife, but can be poisonous to pets and people. Easy to grow with few diseases and pests. Grows slowly and may spread by suckering.  Plant in multiples for pollination.

Pick-up in late April/early May

Seedling orders must be picked up in person in late April or early May in Medford or Phillips, Wisconsin. Taylor County LCD does not ship trees, shrubs or planting products to individual customers.

The exact pick-up dates will be sent out in early April by email and/or USPS mail. The tree pick-up schedule has typically been on a Thursday, 3-6 p.m. and Friday, 8-11 a.m., for Medford orders and Friday from 8:30-11 a.m. for Phillips orders. If you are unable to pick up your order during those days/times, you may send another person to the pick-up or contact the Taylor County LCD at 715-748-1469 to make other arrangements.
